MacBook Overheating? How to Cool It Down
A MacBook that gets hot while exporting video is working correctly. A MacBook that's hot doing nothing is telling you something. The distinction matters, because the first needs no fixing and the second usually has one specific cause — and Activity Monitor names it in about thirty seconds.
What's normal
Apple specifies normal operation between 10°C and 35°C ambient (50°F to 95°F). Within that, a MacBook is designed to get genuinely warm under load — the aluminium case is part of the cooling system, so heat you can feel is heat being shed correctly. Exporting video, compiling code, a long video call, or a game will all make it hot and loud, and none of that is a fault.
What isn't normal: hot while idle, hot immediately after waking, hot with nothing open, or hot enough that the Mac slows to a crawl or shuts down.
Step 1: find what's making the heat
Heat is CPU or GPU work. Something is doing it.
- Open Activity Monitor from
/Applications/Utilities. - Click the % CPU column to sort highest-first, and watch for thirty seconds.
- On a laptop, also check the Energy tab — the 12 hr Power column catches things that have been running hot all day rather than just now.
The names that come up most: a browser (nearly always one tab — Chrome's Window → Task Manager identifies it), a video-conferencing app that stayed running, mds_stores indexing after a big file copy or a macOS update, photoanalysisd processing your photo library, or a backup mid-run.

Step 2: fix the airflow
These are ordered by how often they turn out to be the entire problem:
- Hard, flat surface. A MacBook on a duvet, sofa cushion or lap has its intake blocked. Moving it to a desk often drops temperature within a minute.
- Clear the vents. Dust accumulation is the usual reason a MacBook that used to run cool doesn't any more. Short bursts of compressed air at the vents, from the outside.
- Check the room. A hot room, a sunny windowsill, or a car in summer puts you at the limit before you open anything.
- Take the case off. Thick protective cases insulate exactly the surfaces designed to shed heat.
- Lift the back. A stand or even a couple of books improves airflow underneath measurably.
- Close the lid less. Running a MacBook closed and docked while driving external displays is one of the hottest configurations there is.
Step 3: reduce the load
- Fewer browser tabs, especially video, dashboards and document editors. This is the biggest single lever on most laptops.
- Disconnect extra displays temporarily. Driving two external screens is continuous GPU work.
- Use Low Power Mode when you don't need full speed: System Settings → Battery → Low Power Mode. It reduces performance deliberately, which is the point. What it actually changes.
- Turn off Power Nap if the Mac gets warm in your bag while asleep — how to disable it.
- Prefer Safari over Chrome on battery-powered work. The difference in energy use, and therefore heat, is consistently measurable on Mac hardware.
Measuring it, if you want numbers
macOS doesn't show temperatures in the interface, but Intel Macs expose them:

On Apple silicon these sensors aren't exposed the same way; sudo powermetrics -i1 -n1 reports CPU and GPU power use, which is a reasonable proxy for what's generating heat.
Apple silicon versus Intel
Worth knowing which you have, because the expectations differ. Intel MacBooks — particularly the thin 2016–2020 models — run hot under sustained load by design and throttle readily. Apple silicon MacBooks run dramatically cooler for the same work, and the M-series MacBook Air has no fan at all: it sheds heat through the chassis and slows down under long sustained load rather than getting louder. An Air that's warm during an export isn't broken; it has no other option.
When it's hardware
If the Mac is hot while genuinely idle, on a clean restart, in a cool room, with clear vents and nothing above 5% in Activity Monitor, suspect the cooling system: a fan that has failed, a sensor reporting incorrectly, or degraded thermal paste on an older machine.
Run Apple Diagnostics — shut down, then on Apple silicon hold the power button until startup options appear and press ⌘ + D; on Intel, restart holding D. It reports fan and sensor faults with a reference code. On Intel Macs, an SMC reset is also worth one attempt: shut down, hold Control + Option + Shift (left side) seven seconds, add the power button seven more, release, start up. Apple silicon Macs have no user-resettable SMC.
What not to do
- Don't use a vacuum cleaner on the vents. Static discharge is a real risk to the logic board. Compressed air only.
- Don't install a fan-control app to force fans to maximum permanently. It masks the cause, wears the bearings, and doesn't address why the heat is there.
- Don't put it in the fridge or freezer. Condensation inside a laptop is a far worse problem than heat.
- Don't buy a cleaner app. Nothing about a thermal problem is a junk file.

What temperature is too hot for a MacBook?
Apple specifies an ambient operating range of 10 to 35 degrees Celsius. The Mac itself is designed to run warm under load and will throttle before damage occurs, so the practical warning signs are heat while idle, severe slowdowns, or unexpected shutdowns rather than a specific number.
Why is my MacBook hot when I am not doing anything?
Something is running that you have not noticed. Check Activity Monitor for background indexing, photo analysis, a backup, or a browser tab still playing media. If nothing is above a few percent and it is still hot, suspect a failed fan or sensor.
Is it bad to use a MacBook on a bed or sofa?
It blocks the intake vents, so the Mac cannot draw cool air and heats up quickly. Occasional use is fine; regular use on soft surfaces means running hotter and throttling more often.
Does the MacBook Air have a fan?
Apple silicon MacBook Air models are fanless. They shed heat through the chassis and reduce performance under long sustained load instead of increasing fan speed, so getting warm during heavy work is expected behaviour.
Can overheating damage my Mac?
macOS throttles performance and, if needed, shuts down before damage occurs, so occasional heat is not dangerous. Sustained high temperatures over years do age the battery and thermal paste faster, which is a good reason to keep the vents clear.
