MacBook Battery Draining Fast? 12 Real Fixes
Before changing any settings, spend two minutes reading what macOS already recorded. System Settings → Battery keeps graphs for the last 24 hours and last 10 days, showing exactly when the battery drained and when the screen was on. Drain while you were using it is an app or display problem. Drain overnight with the lid shut is a sleep problem. Steady drain that's simply worse than it used to be is usually the battery itself. Three different problems, and the graph tells you which.
1. Find the app that's doing it
Open Activity Monitor → Energy. The column that matters is 12 hr Power, not the instantaneous figure — you're looking for something that has been draining steadily for hours, not an app that happens to be busy now.
The repeat offenders are browsers with heavy tabs, video-conferencing apps left running, cloud sync clients working through a backlog, and anything with a live dashboard. More on reading Activity Monitor.
2. Turn the screen down
The display is the single largest consumer on a laptop, comfortably ahead of everything else. Dropping brightness a few steps is worth more than any setting on this page.
- Use the F1/F2 keys, or System Settings → Displays.
- Turn on Automatically adjust brightness so it drops indoors.
- Turn the keyboard backlight off in daylight — System Settings → Keyboard.
- Set the display to sleep sooner: System Settings → Lock Screen → Turn display off on battery when inactive.
3. Use Low Power Mode deliberately
System Settings → Battery → Low Power Mode, set to Only on Battery. It reduces processor speed and background activity, which is exactly the trade you want on a train. What it changes in detail.
4. Deal with the browser
On Mac hardware, Safari is consistently more energy-efficient than Chrome for the same pages — the difference over a working day is measurable in hours, not minutes. If you don't want to switch, at least keep fewer heavy tabs open and audit extensions, which run in every tab. If Safari itself is misbehaving.
5. Stop background work you didn't ask for
- Login and background items: System Settings → General → Login Items (Login Items & Extensions on macOS 15 Sequoia and later). The Allow in the Background list is where the surprises are. See managing startup items.
- Power Nap: lets the Mac check mail and sync while asleep. Useful for some, pure drain for others — how to turn it off.
- Photos analysis: after importing a large library,
photoanalysisdruns whenever the Mac is idle. It's finite; leave the Mac plugged in overnight and it finishes. - Cloud sync backlogs: a stalled iCloud sync can spin indefinitely.
6. Find out what's keeping it awake
If the battery drains overnight with the lid closed, something is preventing sleep. macOS will tell you what:

Look for PreventUserIdleSystemSleep and the process named beside it. Media apps, downloaders and conferencing tools all take these assertions legitimately — and sometimes forget to release them. 7. Check whether it's the battery
All of the above assumes a healthy battery. Check that assumption:
- System Settings → Battery, click the ⓘ beside Battery Health. You want Normal; Service Recommended is a clear answer.
- Note Maximum Capacity — the percentage of the original charge it can still hold.
- Hold Option, click Apple menu → System Information, select Power, and read the cycle count. Recent MacBooks are rated for 1000 cycles.

8. Small settings that add up
- Turn off Bluetooth when no devices are connected.
- Disconnect external displays and bus-powered drives on battery — both draw from it.
- Quit apps rather than minimising them; a minimised app keeps working.
- Reduce transparency and motion — less continuous GPU work. How.
- Keep macOS updated; power-management fixes ship in point releases regularly.
9. Habits that keep the battery healthy longer
Leave Optimised Battery Charging on — it learns your routine and holds at 80% until you need the rest, which measurably slows ageing. Newer macOS versions on supported MacBooks add an explicit charge limit for the same purpose. Avoid leaving the Mac at 100% plugged in and hot for weeks at a time, and avoid running it flat repeatedly. Storing a MacBook long-term is best done around half charge.
What not to bother with
- Battery “calibration” cycles. Modern Mac batteries do not need manual calibration; the controller handles it.
- Battery-saver apps. They report what System Settings → Battery and Activity Monitor already show, and use power doing it.
- Resetting the SMC on Apple silicon. There isn't one to reset. On Intel Macs it's occasionally worth a try for stuck charging behaviour.
