Mac Fans Always Running? Why & How to Fix It
Fans run because there's heat to remove. That makes constant fan noise a symptom with a short list of possible causes rather than a mystery — and the first place to look is not the fans at all. There's also one case where the noise isn't the fan: if you have an Apple silicon MacBook Air, it doesn't have one, and whatever you're hearing is something else entirely.
First: does your Mac even have a fan?
The MacBook Air with Apple silicon has no fan. Neither does the 12-inch MacBook. If you have one of those and hear a constant noise, it's coming from somewhere else — a spinning external drive, coil whine from the power supply, or a speaker artefact. Worth establishing before you spend an afternoon on cooling.
Everything else — MacBook Pro, iMac, Mac mini, Mac Studio, Mac Pro, and all Intel laptops including the Intel Air — has fans that will run hard when there's reason to.
Step 1: find the heat source
- Open Activity Monitor, click the CPU tab, and sort by % CPU.
- Watch for thirty seconds. Whatever stays at the top is what the fans are answering.
- On a laptop, check the Energy tab too — the 12 hr Power average catches steady background load that a snapshot misses.
The recurring answers:
- A browser tab. The single most common cause. Video, a live dashboard, a stuck ad script. Chrome's Window → Task Manager points at the exact tab.
- Video conferencing. Zoom, Teams and Meet are all heavy, and some keep working after the call ends if the window is still open.
- Spotlight indexing (
mds,mds_stores) after a large copy or a macOS update — finite, and worth waiting out. Unless it never finishes. - Photos analysis (
photoanalysisd) after importing a library. Also finite. - Time Machine mid-backup (
backupd). kernel_task— this one is different. It isn't generating heat; it's macOS throttling the CPU because of heat, which confirms a thermal problem rather than a busy app.
Step 2: rule out the boring causes
Before anything technical:
- Dust. The most common reason a Mac that used to be quiet isn't. Short bursts of compressed air at the vents — never a vacuum cleaner, which risks static damage.
- Blocked vents. A laptop on a bed or sofa, or an iMac or Mac mini pushed against a wall with the exhaust covered.
- Room temperature. Apple's specified range is 10–35°C. A hot room, or direct sun on the case, means the fans start earlier and stay on longer.
- External displays. Driving extra screens is real, continuous GPU work.

Step 3: reduce the load
Fewer heavy browser tabs; quit video-call apps rather than leaving them minimised; disconnect the second monitor when you don't need it; use Low Power Mode for undemanding work; and turn off Power Nap if the Mac warms up while it's supposed to be asleep.
Checking the fans themselves
On Intel Macs you can read fan speed directly:

Typical idle is roughly 1200–2000 rpm depending on the model, rising to several thousand under load. A fan pinned at maximum while the Mac is idle points at a sensor or controller fault rather than genuine heat.
The SMC reset (Intel only)
Fan behaviour on Intel Macs is governed by the System Management Controller, and it can get stuck — fans at full speed on a cold, idle machine is the classic sign. On an Intel laptop with a T2 chip: shut down, hold Control + Option + Shift (left side) for seven seconds, then add the power button for another seven, release everything, wait a few seconds, and start up.
Apple silicon Macs have no user-resettable SMC. Any advice telling you to reset it on an M-series Mac is out of date — the equivalent is a full shut down, left off for thirty seconds.
When it's a fault
Suspect hardware when the fans run hard with nothing above a few percent in Activity Monitor, on a cold Mac, after a restart, with clear vents. Run Apple Diagnostics: shut down, then on Apple silicon hold the power button until startup options appear and press ⌘ + D; on Intel, restart holding D. It specifically tests fans and thermal sensors and gives you a reference code.
A grinding or rattling noise rather than a rushing one usually means a failing bearing or something touching the blades — that's a service job, and worth doing before it seizes.
On fan-control apps
Third-party utilities can set fan curves manually on Intel Macs. There's one legitimate use — running the fans slightly harder, earlier, to keep temperatures down during long sustained work. Forcing them to maximum permanently to hide a problem just adds noise and wear without addressing the heat, and on Apple silicon these tools have very little to work with. Fix the cause first.

Common questions
Why are my Mac fans running constantly?
Because something is generating heat continuously. The usual causes are a heavy browser tab, a video conferencing app, background indexing after an update, blocked or dusty vents, or a hot room. Activity Monitor's CPU tab names the process in about thirty seconds.
Is it bad if my Mac fans run at full speed?
Not in itself; the fans are doing their job. It becomes a problem when they run at full speed while the Mac is idle and cool, which points to a stuck controller on Intel Macs or a failing fan or sensor.
Does the MacBook Air have fans?
Apple silicon MacBook Air models are fanless, as was the 12-inch MacBook. If one of those seems to be making fan noise, it is coming from something else, such as an external drive or coil whine.
How do I clean my Mac's fans?
Use short bursts of compressed air at the external vents. Never use a vacuum cleaner, which can generate static that damages components. Internal cleaning means opening the machine, which is best left to a service centre unless you are confident.
Will resetting the SMC fix loud fans?
On Intel Macs it sometimes does, since the SMC controls fan behaviour and can get stuck. Apple silicon Macs have no user-resettable SMC, so a full shut down for thirty seconds is the equivalent step.
