How to Show Focus Status in the Mac Menu Bar

Updated July 2026 · 3 min read

Focus modes silence notifications, which is the point — and also the problem. Nothing feels wrong; messages just quietly stop arriving, and hours later you discover Do Not Disturb has been on since your morning meeting. The fix is visibility: a Focus icon in the menu bar that shows what's active at a glance. One dropdown controls when it appears, and it's easy to confuse with a similarly named setting that does something entirely different.

Choose when the Focus icon appears

  1. Open System Settings → Control Center.
  2. Find Focus in the Control Center Modules list.
  3. Pick Show When Active or Always Show in Menu Bar.

The three options, on macOS 13 Ventura, 14 Sonoma, and 15 Sequoia alike:

Using the icon

Click the Focus icon and every mode you've created is listed — Do Not Disturb, Work, Sleep, and any custom ones. Click a mode to turn it on, click the active one to turn it off, and use the options beneath a mode to run it for an hour or until evening rather than indefinitely. Focus Settings… at the bottom jumps you to the full pane. It's the same panel you'd reach through Control Center, minus one click.

Not the same as Share Focus Status

Inside System Settings → Focus you'll find Share Focus Status (Sonoma and Sequoia list it under "Focus status"; Ventura shows it per Focus) — and despite the name, it has nothing to do with the menu bar. It controls whether apps may tell the people contacting you that your notifications are silenced: the "has notifications silenced" line under your name in Messages. The menu bar icon is your own private indicator; Share Focus Status is what everyone else sees. You can happily show one and not the other — many people keep the menu bar icon on and focus-status sharing off.

One icon, every device

Focus modes sync through iCloud when Share across devices is on in System Settings → Focus — and that turns the menu bar icon into a status light for your whole setup. Start Do Not Disturb on your iPhone as you sit down to work, and the moon appears in your Mac's menu bar a moment later; end a Focus on the Mac and your iPad follows. If the icon seems to turn itself on "randomly," a scheduled Focus or another device is almost always the author, and the menu bar glyph is how you catch it early instead of two silent hours later.

The sync is also the argument for Show When Active over hiding the icon entirely: with multiple devices and schedules feeding your Focus state, the Mac's menu bar is the one place the current answer is always visible. Turn sharing off in the same pane if you'd rather each device manage its own silence.

Make the invisible visible

Half of macOS's best settings fail silently — Focus visibility included. Mainspring lays out 90+ hidden macOS options as labelled, reversible toggles so you always know what's on and can flip it back in a click.

Build a Focus worth showing

The icon is more useful when your modes mean something: how to create a custom Focus mode on Mac walks through per-app and per-person notification rules, schedules, and filters worth setting up once.
