Set a Keyboard Shortcut for Do Not Disturb on Mac
A notification banner sliding in during a presentation is a problem you want solved in one keystroke, not a trip through Control Center. macOS has a ready-made Do Not Disturb shortcut — it's just unchecked by default, and hiding in a pane you'd never think to look in.
The built-in shortcut (hidden in Mission Control)
For historical reasons, the Do Not Disturb hotkey lives under Mission Control in the shortcuts list:
- Open System Settings → Keyboard → Keyboard Shortcuts…
- Select Mission Control in the sidebar.
- Find Turn Do Not Disturb On/Off and tick its checkbox.
- Double-click the shortcut column next to it and press your combo —
Ctrl+Option+Cmd+Dis comfortable and unclaimed. - Click Done.
Press the combo anywhere and Do Not Disturb toggles: banners stop, sounds stop, and the Focus icon appears in the menu bar so you can see it's on. Press again to turn it off. Calls and notifications still land silently in Notification Center — you're deferring them, not deleting them.
To undo: untick the checkbox in the same pane. And check your keyboard first — Apple's recent laptop and Magic keyboards already have a Do Not Disturb key on F6 (the crescent moon), which does the same thing with zero setup.
The Shortcuts app version (more control)
The built-in toggle is all-or-nothing. If you want “DND for exactly one hour” on a hotkey, build it in Shortcuts:
- Open the Shortcuts app and click +.
- Add the Set Focus action.
- Configure it: turn Do Not Disturb on until Turned Off — or click the parameter and choose a duration or “until I leave this location”.
- Click the ⓘ info button → Details → Add Keyboard Shortcut, and press a combo.
Because it's a Focus action, the same recipe works for any Focus you've built — a “Work” Focus that only lets colleagues through can have its own hotkey next to plain DND. To undo, delete the hotkey in the shortcut's Details tab or delete the shortcut.
The no-setup tricks
- Option-click the menu bar clock. The oldest trick in the book still works: hold
Optionand click the clock (right end of the menu bar) to toggle Do Not Disturb instantly. Option-click again to turn it off. - Control Center → Focus → Do Not Disturb — two clicks, and the menu offers durations like “For 1 hour” without any setup.
- Automatic schedules — if you keep toggling DND at the same times, stop toggling: System Settings → Focus → Do Not Disturb → Add Schedule can turn it on by time of day, location, or when a particular app opens.
All three routes flip the same switch, and your Macs share it: Focus syncs across devices signed into the same Apple ID (controllable under System Settings → Focus → Share across devices), so the hotkey on your Mac can quiet your iPhone too.
What Do Not Disturb actually silences
DND stops banners, alert sounds, and badge pop-ins — but nothing is lost: everything still collects in Notification Center (click the clock to review it). By default it's a blunt instrument, silencing everyone equally; if that's too much, open System Settings → Focus → Do Not Disturb and add Allowed People and Allowed Apps so a partner's messages or a pager app can still break through while the rest stay quiet. And if you toggle DND constantly, add its status to the menu bar so you can see at a glance why the Mac has gone silent — forgotten-DND is the top cause of “my notifications are broken” reports.
Notification and Focus behavior is scattered across half a dozen Settings panes — Mainspring turns 90+ hidden macOS settings into labelled, reversible toggles instead.

Build the Focus, not just the switch
Do Not Disturb is the bluntest Focus mode. A custom one can allow specific people and apps through while silencing the rest — see how to create a custom Focus mode on Mac.
