Make and Take iPhone Calls on Your Mac

Your phone is charging in another room and someone's calling. With one setting on each device, the call rings on your Mac too — answer it there, talk through the Mac's mic and speakers, and dial out from FaceTime or Contacts without touching the phone. The calls still route through your iPhone; the Mac is just a very good handset.

Enable it on the iPhone (the sender)

1. Open Settings → Phone.
2. Tap Calls on Other Devices.
3. Turn on Allow Calls on Other Devices, then flip the switch for your Mac in the device list below.

Devices appear in that list when they're signed into the same Apple ID with FaceTime active — if the Mac is missing, set up the Mac side first, then return here.

Enable it on the Mac (the receiver)

1. Open FaceTime (yes, phone calls live in FaceTime on the Mac) and sign in with the same Apple ID as the iPhone if you haven't.
2. Go to FaceTime → Settings (⌘,) → General.
3. Tick Calls From iPhone.

That's the whole setup. Both devices need Wi-Fi on and — for the standard mode — the same network: the call relays from the iPhone to the Mac locally. (If your carrier supports Wi-Fi Calling, the iPhone offers an upgraded mode that lets other devices take calls even when they're not near the phone; it'll prompt you inside these same settings.) To undo everything, untick Calls From iPhone on the Mac or flip the Mac's switch off on the iPhone — either end kills it.

Using it day to day

• Incoming: calls appear as a notification in the Mac's top-right corner with Accept and Decline — accept and talk through the Mac's microphone and speakers, or your headphones. The notification's dropdown can also reply with a message or set a reminder.
• Outgoing: in FaceTime, type a number or name and choose the phone call option (not FaceTime video/audio); or hover over a number in Contacts and click the phone icon; or click phone-number links in Safari. The iPhone places the call silently in the background and the audio runs on the Mac.
• Mid-call: mute and keypad controls live in the notification/FaceTime window. Audio device switching follows the Mac's normal sound output settings.

Two expectations to set: the call is still a phone call — it uses your iPhone's cellular plan and number, and the iPhone must be powered on and reachable; and call audio quality is exactly your carrier's, just through better speakers. If a call needs privacy, remember the whole room shares the Mac's speakers — plug in headphones before accepting, not after.

When the Mac stops ringing

1. Same Wi-Fi network? The classic silent failure: the Mac hopped onto a guest network, or the iPhone is on cellular with Wi-Fi Calling unavailable. Put both on the same network and test.
2. Focus modes. A Do Not Disturb schedule on the Mac suppresses call notifications exactly as designed. Check the Focus status in Control Center on both devices.
3. FaceTime notifications allowed? System Settings → Notifications → FaceTime — alerts on. A muted FaceTime can't ring.
4. Cycle the toggles. Turn Calls From iPhone (Mac) and the Mac's entry in Calls on Other Devices (iPhone) off and back on — this re-pairs the relay and clears most stale states. Signing out and into FaceTime on the Mac is the deeper version.
