Handoff Not Working on Mac? How to Fix Continuity

Updated July 2026 · 3 min read

Handoff is magic when it works — start an email on the iPhone, finish it on the Mac — and completely silent when it doesn't. No error, no icon, nothing to click. The fix is almost always in a short list of preconditions, so work them in order; most people are done by step three.

First: where Handoff should appear

Know what "working" looks like so you can test between fixes. On the Mac, an app you were just using on the iPhone shows up as a badged icon at the right end of the Dock (bottom or side). On the iPhone, the Mac's activity appears as a banner at the bottom of the App Switcher (swipe up and hold). Test with a sure thing: open Safari on the iPhone, load any page, and look at the Mac's Dock. And confirm the app itself participates — Safari, Mail, Notes, Pages, Maps, and most Apple apps do, but plenty of third-party apps never adopted Handoff, and no toggle will conjure it for them.

The preconditions (fixes 1–4)

  1. Same Apple ID everywhere. On the Mac: System Settings → your name — check the email. On the iPhone: Settings → your name. Family members' devices signed into their own accounts will never hand off to each other; this catches more people than anything else.
  2. Bluetooth and Wi-Fi on, both devices. Handoff discovers devices over Bluetooth LE and transfers over Wi-Fi — both radios must be up. Wi-Fi doesn't strictly need to be the same network, but being on the same one removes variables.
  3. Proximity. Bluetooth range in practice: same room, up to roughly ten metres. Across the house doesn't count.
  4. The Handoff toggles themselves. Mac: System SettingsGeneralAirDrop & HandoffAllow Handoff between this Mac and your iCloud devices. iPhone: SettingsGeneralAirPlay & HandoffHandoff. Both on. (These same switches are your off switch later, if you ever want Continuity gone.)

The classic resets (fixes 5–7)

  1. Cycle the toggles and radios. Turn Handoff off on both devices, turn Bluetooth off on both, wait ten seconds, reverse it all. This forces a fresh Bluetooth discovery and clears most wedged states.
  2. Restart both devices. Boring; frequently decisive. Retest with the Safari trick after each step rather than at the end, so you know which fix actually landed.
  3. Sign out of the Apple ID and back in on the misbehaving device (System Settings → your name → Sign Out, keep local copies of data when asked, sign back in). This rebuilds the device's Continuity identity and fixes the stubborn cases. Allow time for iCloud to resettle afterwards.

Handoff's siblings fail the same way

Universal Clipboard, iPhone calls on the Mac, and Continuity Camera all lean on the same Apple ID + Bluetooth + Wi-Fi triad, so the checklist above fixes them too. If copy-paste between devices is your actual complaint, Universal Clipboard has two extra quirks worth knowing.
