How to Handwrite Chinese Characters on a Mac Trackpad

Your Mac's trackpad can double as a handwriting pad: draw Chinese characters with a fingertip and macOS recognizes them as you write — no drawing tablet, no phone workaround. The feature is built into macOS 13, 14, and 15 for Simplified and Traditional Chinese, and it takes one input source and one shortcut to set up.

Add the handwriting input source

1. Open System Settings → Keyboard.
2. Under Text Input, click Edit… next to Input Sources.
3. Click +, select Chinese, Simplified or Chinese, Traditional in the language list.
4. Choose Handwriting from that language's input methods and click Add.

Adding a second input source puts the Input menu (a language icon) in your menu bar — that's normal, and it's how you'll see which input is active. Handwriting is available for Chinese and Cantonese; other languages don't get trackpad handwriting, which is worth knowing before you go looking for it.

Open the panel: Ctrl+Shift+Space

Click into any text field, then press Ctrl + Shift + Space. Two things happen at once:

• A handwriting panel appears at the bottom of the screen, mirroring your strokes and showing candidate characters.
• The trackpad switches to absolute mode — it stops moving the pointer and instead maps 1:1 to the panel, like a small graphics tablet. Touch the top-left of the trackpad and you're drawing at the panel's top-left.

This mode switch is the part that disorients people on the first try: the cursor "stops working" because the trackpad is now a writing surface. Press Ctrl + Shift + Space again (or Esc) and it goes back to being a normal trackpad. If the shortcut does nothing, check that the Handwriting input source is actually selected in the menu bar Input menu — the panel only opens while a Chinese input source is available.

Writing, candidates, and corrections

1. Draw the character with one finger, stroke by stroke. Stroke order helps recognition but doesn't have to be perfect — the recognizer is forgiving of casual handwriting.
2. Watch the candidates. As you write, recognized characters appear beside the panel, refining with each stroke.
3. Insert a candidate by tapping the zone of the trackpad that corresponds to it — the panel shows which edge zones map to which candidates. The top match can be inserted and the panel cleared for the next character.
4. Fix mistakes with the delete zone (mapped on the trackpad, shown in the panel) — it removes your last stroke; a fresh start is just a moment's pause and rewrite.

With a little practice the rhythm becomes write–tap–write–tap, and it's genuinely quick for the characters whose Pinyin you can't remember — which is the classic reason to reach for handwriting input in the first place.

Practical notes

• Works with built-in MacBook trackpads and the Magic Trackpad. A mouse can't do it — there's no surface to write on — and the panel won't be offered without a Multi-Touch trackpad present.
• Cantonese gets the same treatment: add the Cantonese, Traditional input source and its Handwriting method appears alongside — same panel, same shortcut, same trackpad behavior.
• Write big. The trackpad maps to the whole panel, so strokes that use most of the surface recognize better than cramped corner writing — especially for dense characters with many strokes.
• Mixed input is normal: most people pair Handwriting with a Pinyin or Zhuyin input source, switch between them from the Input menu, and reserve handwriting for unknown characters.
• The shortcut is fixed to Ctrl + Shift + Space; if a launcher app has claimed that combination, give the launcher a different one.
• Removal is clean: delete the Handwriting input source from the same Input Sources list, and the shortcut, panel, and menu bar entry disappear together.
