How to Use Spotlight as a Calculator and Converter (Mac)

The fastest calculator on your Mac has no icon. Press Cmd+Space, type 240*1.18, and the answer is on screen before the Calculator app would have finished bouncing in the Dock. Spotlight also converts currencies, units, and temperatures inline — and Cmd+C copies the result. Here's everything the hidden calculator understands.

Math, straight into the search box

Open Spotlight with Cmd+Space and just type. The big result at the top updates live as you type:

• Basic operators: + - * /, with parentheses for grouping — (89+45+120)/3.
• Powers with ^: 2^16 gives 65536. Percentages work inline: 18500*0.15 for a 15% cut.
• Common functions: sqrt(2), sin(45), log(100) and friends all evaluate.

Press Cmd+C and the result (just the number) is on your clipboard — you never open an app, never touch the mouse beyond nothing at all. For anything longer, pressing Return on the calculator result opens the real Calculator app with your expression's answer ready to build on.

Unit conversions

Type a quantity and Spotlight guesses the conversion you want, showing alternatives underneath. Be explicit with in or to when you want a specific target:

• 32 ft in m — length, any direction: miles, km, inches, cm.
• 180 lbs in kg — weight; 500 ml in cups — volume, great mid-recipe.
• 72 f in c — temperature, no degree symbols needed.
• 25 mb in gb — data sizes work too.

Even without a target unit, typing 5 km shows the mile equivalent plus a stack of other conversions in the results list.

Currency, live

Type 100 usd in eur, 250 gbp in inr, or just 99 euros — Spotlight converts at a recent market rate (it needs an internet connection for this one, and rates are indicative, not bank-grade). Symbols work as well as codes: $149 in ₹ gets you rupees. This is the feature that quietly replaces a whole tab of xe.com.

The bits people miss

• Time zones: type a city name — Tokyo — and the world clock result shows its current local time right in the panel.
• Definitions and words ride along: keep typing letters instead of numbers and Spotlight offers dictionary results — same reflex, different lookup.
• It works during other work. Spotlight floats over full-screen apps and video calls, so a quick Cmd+Space, calculation, Cmd+C, Esc round trip is invisible to everyone else on the call.
• If calculator results ever stop appearing, make sure Spotlight's suggestions haven't been switched off in System Settings → Siri & Spotlight (macOS 13/14) or Spotlight (macOS 15) — the calculator itself has no toggle, but a heavily trimmed results list can hide conversion suggestions.
