How to Speed Up an Old MacBook (Honest Guide)
There is a genuine amount you can do for a five- or ten-year-old MacBook, and there is a point past which every guide is selling you something. This one is ordered by how much difference each change actually makes, and it says plainly where the ceiling is — because knowing that is worth more than another list of tips.
First, know what you have
Open the Apple menu → About This Mac. You want three facts: the model year, the chip (Intel or Apple M-series), and the memory. They determine which of the sections below apply, because the advice for a 2013 MacBook Pro and a 2020 M1 Air has almost nothing in common.
The two hardware upgrades that beat every software tip
If your MacBook is old enough to have replaceable parts, this is where the real gains are, and it isn't close.
- An SSD, if it still has a spinning hard drive. Any MacBook or MacBook Pro shipped with a 5400 rpm drive — broadly the non-Retina models up to 2012 — is bottlenecked by that drive for every single operation. Fitting an SSD is the single biggest improvement available to any computer, and it costs less than a set of tyres.
- More RAM, on models that allow it. Going from 4 GB or 8 GB to 16 GB stops the constant swapping that makes an old Mac feel unresponsive. Check memory pressure first — if it's green, more RAM won't help you.
Neither applies to Retina models from roughly 2013 onwards, where storage and memory are soldered. If that's your Mac, skip to the software sections — and know that you're tuning, not upgrading.
Give the disk room to breathe
This is the highest-value software change on an old Mac, because older machines usually have small drives that filled up years ago. macOS needs free space for swap and caching; below roughly 10–15% free, everything degrades at once.
Start at System Settings → General → Storage, then work through Downloads, your largest files, and duplicates. Developers should check what Xcode is holding and browser users what Chrome is holding. Cut what runs without being asked
Years of installed software leaves a long tail of updaters and helpers, all competing for a slower processor.
- System Settings → General → Login Items — empty Open at Login of anything not needed immediately.
- Go through Allow in the Background carefully. On a ten-year-old Mac this list is often full of helpers for software uninstalled long ago.

Reduce what macOS has to draw
On old integrated graphics, the compositor is a real cost. This is the section that makes the machine feel new, and none of it removes functionality.
- System Settings → Accessibility → Display → Reduce motion — removes space-switching and full-screen transitions.
- Reduce transparency, same panel — solid menus and panels instead of live blur. This one is measurable in

- Clear the Desktop — a few hundred icons is real Finder work at every login.
- Use a plain solid-colour wallpaper instead of a dynamic or aerial one, which are decoded continuously.
Change how you browse
On an old Mac the browser is usually the heaviest thing running, and habits matter more than settings. Keep fewer tabs open, audit extensions ruthlessly (each one runs in every tab), and prefer Safari over Chrome on Intel laptops — it's consistently lighter on memory and battery. Two things worth doing once

Where the ceiling is
An honest ending, because most articles avoid it. If your Mac has 4 GB of soldered RAM, or is stuck on a macOS version that no longer receives security updates, or takes two minutes to open a browser after everything above — software has run out of road. An old Mac that's been tuned well makes a genuinely good second machine: a writing computer, a media box, a kitchen browser. Just don't spend a weekend expecting it to become a new one.

Is it worth upgrading RAM in an old MacBook?
If the model has replaceable memory, generally the non-Retina models up to 2012, and memory pressure runs yellow or red, then yes: going to 16 GB is the second-biggest improvement after an SSD. Retina and Apple silicon models have soldered memory that cannot be changed.
How old is too old for a MacBook?
The practical limit is security updates. Apple supports each macOS release for roughly three years, so a Mac that can no longer run a supported version is past the point where it should handle email, banking or work files, whatever its speed.
Does reducing transparency actually speed up an old Mac?
Yes, measurably. Live blur behind menus and panels is continuous GPU and compositor work. Turning it off lowers WindowServer CPU usage and is one of the few settings with a visible effect on old integrated graphics.
Will a cleaner app speed up an old MacBook?
