How to Make Your Mac Read Text Aloud

Select any text — an article, a long email, your own draft — press Option+Esc, and your Mac reads it to you in a genuinely natural voice. It's built into every Mac as Spoken Content, it's off by default, and it takes two minutes to set up well. Proofreading by ear catches mistakes your eyes skate over; that alone justifies the toggle.

Turn on Speak Selection

1. Open System Settings → Accessibility → Spoken Content.
2. Turn on Speak selection.
3. Click the ⓘ (info) button next to it to see the details: the keyboard shortcut (default Option+Esc), highlighting options, and the controller setting. Leave the defaults for now.

That's the whole activation. Select text in Safari, Mail, Pages, Notes — anywhere — and press Option+Esc. Press it again to stop. If nothing is selected, macOS speaks the text it finds in the current window instead, which works surprisingly well on articles.

Swap the robot for a Siri voice

The default voice is fine; the downloadable ones are startlingly good. In the same Spoken Content pane:

1. Click the System voice dropdown and choose Manage Voices…
2. Browse by language. The Siri voices are the most natural — download one (they're sizeable, several hundred MB, so it happens over Wi-Fi in the background).
3. Many named voices also come in Enhanced and Premium grades — higher quality than the compact default for a bigger download.
4. Once downloaded, select it as the System voice.

The Speaking rate slider lives right below. Most people creep it upward over a week or two — spoken-word speed is a skill, and 1.2× quickly feels normal.

Control playback while it reads

When speech starts, an on-screen controller can appear with pause, skip forward/back by sentence, and a speed control — set Show controller to Automatically in the Speak selection options if you don't see it. Two options in the same panel make long listening dramatically better:

• Highlight content: have macOS highlight each word, sentence, or both as it's spoken — following along visually keeps your place in long documents.
• Sentence style: choose underline or background color for the current sentence.

Two related switches in Spoken Content are worth knowing even if you leave them off: Speak announcements reads alerts and notifications aloud, and Speak items under the pointer narrates whatever you hover — an accessibility feature proper, but occasionally handy for anyone.

Turn it off

The undo mirrors the setup: System Settings → Accessibility → Spoken Content → Speak selection off. Your downloaded voices stay installed (delete them from Manage Voices if you want the disk space back), and Option+Esc goes back to doing nothing.
