Hot Corners With Modifier Keys: Stop Accidental Triggers
Hot corners are either the best shortcut on your Mac or a daily ambush — the screensaver that eats your cursor, the Mission Control fan-out you never asked for. The fix has been built in for years and is nearly undiscoverable: bind each corner to a modifier key, so it fires only while you're holding Cmd, Option, Shift, or Control.
Add a modifier to a hot corner
- Open System Settings → Desktop & Dock.
- Scroll to the very bottom and click Hot Corners…
- Click the dropdown for the corner you want to tame.
- Hold a modifier key —
⌘,⌥,⇧, or⌃— while you click the action in the menu. You'll see the key's symbol appear beside the action name (for example, ⌥ Mission Control). - Click Done.
From now on, slamming the pointer into that corner does nothing unless the key is down. The trick works identically on macOS 13 Ventura, 14 Sonoma, and 15 Sequoia, and you can even stack modifiers — hold ⌘⌥ together while selecting and the corner requires both.
To undo it, reopen the menu and pick the action again without holding anything; to disable a corner outright, choose the "–" entry at the top of the menu.
Why this beats turning hot corners off
Most people who get burned by an accidental screensaver just disable the corner and lose the shortcut. The modifier approach keeps the speed — flick to a corner is still faster than any keyboard chord to reach for — while making the trigger deliberate. The pointer travel does the aiming; the held key is the safety.
It's especially worth setting up if you use edge-heavy apps: closing browser tabs near the top-right, hitting menu bar items top-left, or grabbing scroll bars along the right side all involve pointer paths that graze corners hundreds of times a day.
Pairings that work well
- ⌥ + Start Screen Saver / Lock Screen — locking your Mac by flicking to a corner with Option held is fast and never fires by accident. (Quick Note in the bottom-right corner ships as a default on modern macOS; give it a modifier if you keep invoking it while closing windows.)
- ⌘ + Mission Control or Application Windows — window overviews you summon a dozen times an hour, safely.
- ⇧ + Desktop — peek at the desktop without your drag operations triggering it.
- No modifier for Put Display to Sleep — if a corner action is harmless and reversible by moving the mouse, you may prefer it instant; mix modified and unmodified corners freely.
Avoid ⌃ for corners you use while dragging files, since Control-click reads as a right-click the moment you release, and avoid pairing a corner with a modifier you already hold constantly in your main app (designers holding Shift for constrained drags, for instance).
If a corner still fires without the key
Reopen Hot Corners… and check the dropdown actually shows the modifier symbol — if you released the key a beat too early while clicking, macOS saves the action unmodified. Set it again, keeping the key held until after the menu closes.
The reverse problem — a corner that never fires — usually means you're expecting the wrong trigger. A modified corner needs the key down before the pointer arrives; pressing it after you've parked in the corner does nothing until you move the pointer out and back in. And on multi-display setups, remember each corner belongs to the combined desktop's outer edge: with a second monitor to the right, your main screen's right corners aren't corners at all — the pointer sails through onto the other display. Put must-work actions on the corners of the arrangement's true perimeter.
