How to Remove the Siri Icon From the Mac Menu Bar

The Siri orb in the menu bar is a button many Mac users never press — assistants get summoned by voice or keyboard, not by mouse. Hiding the icon takes one dropdown and changes nothing else about Siri. Remove the icon

1. Open System Settings → Control Center.
2. Scroll to the Menu Bar Only section.
3. Set Siri to Don't Show in Menu Bar.

The orb disappears on the spot. As with other system icons, holding Cmd and dragging the icon off the bar does the same thing by gesture. Both are reversed by returning the dropdown to Show in Menu Bar, and the location is the same on macOS 13 Ventura, 14 Sonoma, and 15 Sequoia.

Siri keeps working without it

Hiding the icon removes a launcher, not the assistant. Everything else you've enabled continues:

• The keyboard shortcut — commonly press-and-hold Cmd+Space; the exact combo is shown in the Keyboard Shortcut dropdown in Siri's settings, where you can also change it.
• Voice activation — "Siri" or "Hey Siri," if your Mac supports it and you enabled it.
• Type to Siri — if you've turned it on under Accessibility.

In other words: hide the icon freely. If you use Siri at all, you'll notice no difference beyond a cleaner bar.

Turning Siri off entirely

1. Open System Settings → Siri & Spotlight on macOS 13 or 14 — the pane is called Apple Intelligence & Siri on macOS 15 Sequoia.
2. Turn off Ask Siri (labelled simply Siri on Sequoia).
3. When prompted, choose whether to keep or delete Siri's voice recordings.

With Siri off, the menu bar icon goes away on its own, the shortcut goes dead, and voice activation stops listening. It's just as reversible — the same toggle brings everything back — so you can try a Siri-free month without commitment. Middle grounds exist too: keeping Siri but disabling its suggestions and learning is its own set of switches in the same pane.

Does hiding the icon make Siri stop listening?

No — and it's worth being precise, because the icon and the microphone are unrelated. Whether your Mac listens for "Siri" or "Hey Siri" is controlled solely by the Listen for setting in Siri's own pane; the menu bar icon is a launcher button, and removing it changes nothing about voice detection, suggestions, or what Siri learns. If your concern is privacy rather than pixels, the icon is the wrong target: turn off voice activation, review Siri & Dictation in the Privacy & Security pane, and delete your Siri history from the same settings — each is independent of the others.

When Siri does activate, you'll still see it: the response panel appears near the top-right of the screen regardless of whether the menu bar icon exists. So the honest summary is: hide the icon for a cleaner bar with zero functional cost, disable Ask Siri for an actually Siri-free Mac, and don't mistake one for the other — macOS certainly doesn't.

One neighboring feature to leave alone: Dictation. It's separate from Siri — its own setting, its own microphone key on recent keyboards — and hiding or even disabling Siri doesn't touch it.
