Hide the Dock for a distraction-free Mac
A row of bouncing, badge-covered app icons is a standing invitation to switch tasks. Hide the Dock and that invitation disappears — the bar slides off-screen and stays gone until you deliberately call it back. Here's how to set it, plus a few companion tweaks that quiet the whole desktop.
Hide the Dock so nothing pulls your eye
The Dock is a peripheral-vision magnet. A red badge climbing on Mail, an icon bouncing for attention, the row of everything you could be doing instead — none of it is on the slide or the document in front of you, but all of it is in view. Auto-hide removes it from the frame entirely so your focus has nowhere to wander.
- Open System Settings → Desktop & Dock.
- Turn on Automatically hide and show the Dock.
The Dock vanishes. It only returns when you push your pointer against its screen edge and hold there for a moment — a deliberate gesture you won't make by accident. The behaviour is the same across macOS 13 Ventura, 14 Sonoma, and 15 Sequoia.
Or flip it from Terminal
# Hide the Dock until you reach for it
defaults write com.apple.dock autohide -bool true
killall Dock
# Undo — keep the Dock always visible
defaults write com.apple.dock autohide -bool false
killall Dock
Prefer a key you can hit mid-flow? Cmd+Option+D toggles the Dock's visibility instantly, so you can banish it while you write and summon it back when you're done.
Silence what the Dock was showing you
Hiding the Dock removes the temptation from view, but the notifications underneath it are still firing. For a genuinely quiet desktop, turn off the noise at the source too:
- Stop the attention-grabbing bounce with how to disable Dock icon bounce on Mac.
- Kill the red unread counts with how to hide notification badges on Dock icons.
With the Dock hidden and those two off, an app can no longer reach out and grab you — you go to it when you choose to.
When you do need the Dock
Nothing is lost by hiding it. Every app you had pinned is still there; reveal the Dock with a firm pointer push to the edge, or switch apps entirely without it using Cmd+Tab. Many people who hide the Dock find they open apps by keyboard or Spotlight and rarely reveal it at all — which is the quiet you were after.
